Eternal Bummer Records is excited to bring to you its tenth release, Everybody Knows This is a Neil Young Cover Split by Rory Lidstone and featuring Mikey Chuck Rivers, for free download.
Rory Lidstone is Cambridge, Ontario’s brightest-shining hidden gem. His first solo release, What’s the Story, Rory?, is an inspired collection of acoustic ruminations on, his words, “sad things like death and loneliness.” His second EP, Scarecrow, will soon be released through Eternal Bummer, and it’s a wicked doozy. As a preview, Rory and his good friend Mikey Chuck Rivers teamed up for this here preview EP, featuring three covers of songs by Canadian treasure Neil Young, who recently released an autobiography Waging Heavy Peace as well as two albums with his band Crazy Horse. Let’s call this meeting of musical heavyweights a holy trinity.
The first track, “Barstool Blues” off of 1975’s Zuma, features crunchy electric-guitar with Lidstone wailing lines like “once there was a friend of mine who died a thousand deaths” with hearty emotional heft. Fittingly, this track will be the closing number on his upcoming release Scarecrow. The other two numbers were recorded loosely live off the floor in Mikey’s Toronto apartment, about a month into his tenancy. “The Losing End (When You’re On)” comes from the album Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, whose title and album art inspired this EP’s, and features delicate chorus close-harmonization between the two buddies. The final track “Bound for Glory”, a ditty from Young’s country album Old Ways, was originally a duet between Young and outlaw country superstar Waylon Jennings; fitting, no? The friendship between Rory and Mikey dates back to a chance encounter in a Literary Theory course, bonding over one’s Pixies shirt and their shared love of post-rock. Five years later, their buddy-dom culminates in this fun and limber release that exists as a taste of both Rory and Mikey’s projects to come.
