Eternal Bummer Records is hoppy to bring to you its eighteenth release, Paul Frayne’s Just As I Am, for free download.
Just before the closing of St. Joseph’s Church in Kingsbridge, Ontario, Paul Frayne (father of EB garage rawk-roller Kevin Frayne) teamed with producers Anthony Strome (Fermented Oranges, Builder Refused) and Jimmy Grace (Like Spinning Records, Grace Family fame) to record a series of mostly acapella Irish-Catholic hymns in his hometown choir loft. Mastered and mixed by Beach Road Studios head Siegfried Meier (Stuck Out Here, Shotgun Rules, Machete Avenue), Just As I Am is beautiful, ornate, and haunting all at once, like if Daniel Johnston, Jeff Mangum, and Pavarotti took turns belting out the Catholic Book of Worship catalog after a few glasses of Merlot.
Here’s Paul’s story in in his own words:
“I was born in Goderich, Ontario on November 5, 1953. My parents, Eugene and Betty Frayne, raised eight children in Ashfield Township, Huron County. I am the third of six boys and two girls. My parents farmed to make their living. At the age of twenty one, I started working with my father and I have been farming ever since. In 1982 I married Anita Hogan, also of Ashfield Township. We reside on the family farm, just north of Kingsbridge, and have three grown children, Gene, Mary Frances and Kevin. Gene and his wife, Megan, have three young daughters – Nora, Clara and Tessa.
I was fortunate in that I was around to be influenced by the singing voices of my father and my sister, Marianne. In the late summer of 2012, I was encouraged by my family to make some recordings of my own in St. Joseph’s Church, Kingsbridge. I did this over the course of four or five sessions. The results were placed on the back burner until this past winter when, with the aid of several very qualified people, my CD, “Just As I Am” was completed.
This process has been a great experience for me. I enjoyed every step of it very much.
Physical copies of the album are for sale at St. Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, Radiant Life and Fincher’s in Goderich as well as the Lucknow Pharmacy in Lucknow. Proceeds from the sale of the disc will be split between the Goderich Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Community and Family Services of The Salvation Army in Goderich.
As an Easter long weekend gift, enjoy a digital copy of the record for free from yr bummed bunnies at EBR.
