NATIONAL DRONE DAY

What is National Drone Day?
From Weird Canada:
“There is a deeper, more psychological and important reason for the existence of a day where we come together to celebrate drone music. As a gateway into fringe music, drone possesses many convenient qualities: it’s an onomatopoeia; easy to understand yet broad enough to encapsulate a wide variety of experimental streams. ”

What does this mean?
Right? Totally.

So what do we do?
Show up to Eternal Bummer Manor this Saturday. Bring some snacks. Bring some dranks. Bring your own instrument. Bring yrself. The rest will be provided. You’re invited.

PWYC. BYOB. BYOI. MAKE SOME NOISE.

STAY BUMMED xoxo
Love,

EBR018 – PAUL FRAYNE – JUST AS I AM

PAUL FRAYNE
JUST AS I AM

Eternal Bummer Records is hoppy to bring to you its eighteenth release, Paul Frayne’s Just As I Am, for free download.

Just before the closing of St. Joseph’s Church in Kingsbridge, Ontario, Paul Frayne (father of EB garage rawk-roller Kevin Frayne) teamed with producers Anthony Strome (Fermented Oranges, Builder Refused) and Jimmy Grace (Like Spinning Records, Grace Family fame) to record a series of mostly acapella Irish-Catholic hymns in his hometown choir loft. Mastered and mixed by Beach Road Studios head Siegfried Meier (Stuck Out Here, Shotgun Rules, Machete Avenue), Just As I Am is beautiful, ornate, and haunting all at once, like if Daniel Johnston, Jeff Mangum, and Pavarotti took turns belting out the Catholic Book of Worship catalog after a few glasses of Merlot.

Here’s Paul’s story in in his own words:
I was born in Goderich, Ontario on November 5, 1953. My parents, Eugene and Betty Frayne, raised eight children in Ashfield Township, Huron County. I am the third of six boys and two girls. My parents farmed to make their living. At the age of twenty one, I started working with my father and I have been farming ever since. In 1982 I married Anita Hogan, also of Ashfield Township. We reside on the family farm, just north of Kingsbridge, and have three grown children, Gene, Mary Frances and Kevin. Gene and his wife, Megan, have three young daughters – Nora, Clara and Tessa.

I was fortunate in that I was around to be influenced by the singing voices of my father and my sister, Marianne. In the late summer of 2012, I was encouraged by my family to make some recordings of my own in St. Joseph’s Church, Kingsbridge. I did this over the course of four or five sessions. The results were placed on the back burner until this past winter when, with the aid of several very qualified people, my CD, “Just As I Am” was completed.

This process has been a great experience for me. I enjoyed every step of it very much.

April 2014

Physical copies of the album are for sale at St. Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, Radiant Life and Fincher’s in Goderich as well as the Lucknow Pharmacy in Lucknow. Proceeds from the sale of the disc will be split between the Goderich Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Community and Family Services of The Salvation Army in Goderich.

As an Easter long weekend gift, enjoy a digital copy of the record for free from yr bummed bunnies at EBR.

MIKEY CHUCK RIVERS/ROBOTS! EVERYWHERE!! – “CALL ME SOME, LOOKING FOR TIME” LIVE

MIKEY CHUCK RIVERS AND ROBOTS! EVERYWHERE!!
“CALL ME SOME, LOOKING FOR TIME”
Live at Robot! House!! in Ottawa, Ontario

Y’all remember the unreal live shows that one-man-band extraordinaire Robots! Everywhere!! put on at the Eternal Bummer Manor back in its brief-run? Well, the Ottawa resident returned the favour by throwing Clinton’s own (and temporary Capital City resident) Mikey Chuck Rivers a going away party this past St. Patrick’s Day at his own Robot! House!! in Ottawa. As if the lovefest couldn’t get any more romantic, the two collaborated for a version of R!E!!’s “Call Me Some, Looking for Time” (from the EB-released self-titled release) and it was lovingly captured by the fine folks at Ottawa Showbox.

R!E!! will be playing Mavericks with Andrew W.K. this Thursday, March 27th (perfect match).
Mikey’s at The Docks in Bayfield with NQ Arbuckle Saturday, April 12th and just announced at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto with Two Cow Garage & Drag the River on Monday, May 19th.

Stay bummed for more info on the return of Eternal Bummer Manor this summer xoxo.

EBR017 – MAJOR/MINOR – SELF-TITLED

Major Minor - Self-Titled front album cover
EBR017
MAJOR/MINOR
SELF-TITLED

Eternal Bummer Records is delighted to bring to you its seventeenth release, Major/Minor’s debut record Self-Titled, for free download.

Charlie Weber is a junior Huron County institution, logging man-hours in bands like the controversially-named Saving Our Scene and Winchelsea, Ontario’s own Win Chelsea with fellow S.O.S.-expat Evan Clapp (EB released their album A Turn for the Better in 2012). After the slow dissolve of W.C., Charlie struck out on his own under the nom de guerre Major/Minor and began establishing himself as a folk-influenced, pop-punk indebted singer-songwriter. Self-Titled is his debut album’s cheeky name, but the contents inside are anything but; these are five lean cuts of earnest, honest acoustic self-actualization.

One of Charlie’s great gifts is his nimble handle on wordplay. The “self-titled” title track is a meta little ditty on being a heart-on-sleeve songwriter, where the pun-peppered “Clover” is a riff on the relationship between romance and chance. When he plunges into darker territories like alcoholic salvation, nostalgia, and heartache (a lot of heartache), his wit doesn’t wither; in “The Kids Will Love It”, he likens a crying friend’s nonexistent smile  to a pavement-smothered flower that can’t reach the rain and it’s too durned sweet to be sad. So you see when Charlie drop the tropes of a melancholy old soul, he really comes across as a wide-eyed wunderkind, youthfully naive and genuinely inspired by life’s pits and pratfalls rather than down and out with disillusion. Self-Titled is a sensitive and sincere coming-of-age story aptly told and sung by a fella teetering perfectly on an emotional balance beam, and EB couldn’t be happier to share it with y’all.

1. Self-Titled
2. Clover
3. The Kids Will Love It
4. Stay Gold Ponyboy

BUMMED DAZE OF CHRISTMAS 2013: DAY 13

BUMMED DAZE OF CHRISTMAS 2013
DAY 13
EMMETT O’REILLY – HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS

Ho-ho-hey what’s up dudes! EB is back to bummer up your advent calendar with a song a day from our new Christmas compilation Holidazed, available now for free download!
For our thirteenth and final bummed daze entry, we have Emmett O’Reilly hoping you “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.

From the liner notes to Holidazed: An Eternal Bummer Christmas Volume 2:
To close out this album, Emmett O’Reilly (Stuck Out Here, The Capitol Beat, Deny the Threat), over bass chords and trumpet runs, lends a melancholic mood to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” O’Reilly croons in the background, letting the mostly smooth (though sometimes cantankerous) carol play out like a late night fireside soundtrack. Knowing “The Snack King” O’Reilly, he’s got you covered for the hot chocolate and marshmallows too.
